Los Angeles’ long-awaited transit connection to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is finally taking shape.

Metro announced this week that the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station, located at Aviation Boulevard and 96th Street, will officially open to the public on June 6, 2025. The new station, years in the making, will link Metro’s C Line (formerly Green Line) and K Line (Crenshaw/LAX Line) with expanded bus and shuttle services, offering a significant upgrade to airport access for Angelenos and travelers alike.

Although direct rail service into LAX terminals will not be available until the opening of the airport's Automated People Mover (APM)—expected in early 2026—the new station represents a major milestone in the city’s efforts to modernize and connect its sprawling transportation network.

A New Gateway to LAX

The LAX/Metro Transit Center is designed to be a multi-modal hub. It will feature:

  • Light rail platforms for the C and K Lines

  • A spacious bus plaza serving local and regional lines

  • Metro Bike Hub facilities

  • Passenger pick-up and drop-off zones

  • A Metro customer service center

Until the Automated People Mover is completed, Metro will operate free shuttle buses from the Transit Center to all airport terminals, providing a seamless transfer for passengers heading to and from flights.

“This is a transformational project for Los Angeles,” said Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins during a press conference.“It brings us one step closer to providing world-class transit options for residents, workers, and visitors.”

Metro expects the Transit Center to serve tens of thousands of daily riders, easing congestion on roadways around LAX and connecting the airport to the broader Southern California region via public transit.

Preparing for Global Events

The timing of the Transit Center's opening is significant.Los Angeles is preparing to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, events expected to draw millions of international visitors. Improving public access to LAX has been a key infrastructure priority ahead of these events.

The LAX/Metro Transit Center project is part of Measure M, a voter-approved sales tax initiative funding major transportation improvements across Los Angeles County. The Measure M program is projected to invest over $120 billion in transit, highway, and active transportation projects over the next 40 years.

According to Metro, once the Automated People Mover is operational, passengers will be able to travel from Union Station to LAX terminals with just one transfer—cutting travel times and offering a sustainable alternative to driving.

What's Next

Following the opening of the Transit Center, Metro will continue testing and integration work for the People Mover connection. The 2.25-mile elevated train system will transport passengers between the Metro Transit Center, parking facilities, and airport terminals every two minutes during peak hours.

The LAX/Metro Transit Center marks a turning point for a city often defined by its reliance on cars. As Metro, LAX, and other agencies push forward with major infrastructure expansions, Los Angeles edges closer to the integrated, multi-modal transit future long promised—and long overdue.
