Millions of people across Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and parts of southern France were left without electricity on Monday following a widespread power outage that hit the Iberian Peninsula.

The disruption began around 12:30 p.m. Central European Summer Time, crippling transportation networks, affecting metro systems, halting flights, and causing major disruptions to businesses and homes. In some regions, mobile networks and internet access were temporarily lost.

Local authorities initially suspected technical failures but later pointed to an unusual atmospheric disturbance — potentially linked to intense solar activity — as a possible cause. Officials in Spain and Portugal emphasized that investigations are ongoing, and have not ruled out cybersecurity vulnerabilities as a contributing factor.

Spain’s national grid operator, Red Eléctrica, reported gradual restoration of power by evening hours, but warned that full stabilization could take additional time.

Governments across the affected region have urged citizens to conserve electricity as grids return to normal and have launched formal investigations into the resilience of critical infrastructure.

This outage highlights broader concerns about energy security and emergency preparedness as extreme weather and cyber threats increasingly strain global infrastructure systems.
